He also recently took part in the project, Dragon Music Season, wherein he sings and soothes the hearts of the Chinoy elderly who have been affected by the pandemic. Tiu has always had the talent and passion for singing and has performed and directed in various concerts that caters to his beloved Filipino-Chinese community. He has also dabbled in theatrical acting with Chancel Repertory, including playing the role of an emcee and friend of Enchong Dee’s character in Mano Po 7. Tiu is also a multilingual performer, fluent in English, Mandarin, Fukien, and Filipino. This has given him the opportunity to host and perform in numerous private events of affluent Filipino and Chinese families, overseas workers, foreign nationals, politicians, other high-profile Chinoys, and international Chinese superstars. In an exclusive interview, we ask Tiu about his successful career journey in the industry. What do you love about singing? I have always been in love with music as a child. I remember going through all our records at home, carefully picking them out of the file, playing them on the turntable, and singing along. This would instantly lift my spirits. Especially in the events industry, professionals are expected to be… PROFESSIONAL. So here are a few tips to those who want to get into the industry and enjoy longevity. 1. Be on time Always be on time, if not earlier. If the call time is at six in the evening, make sure you are there on or before six in the evening. It takes just one supplier’s tardiness to cause unnecessary delay on the entire event’s timeline. I normally arrive at around two in the afternoon even if the reception is pegged to start at seven in the evening. As there are so many things to prepare, I need to ensure that enough time is alloted before guests start pouring in. 2. Be proactive Do not wait to be reminded on what you have to do. As a professional supplier, perform your duties with minimal supervision. As mentioned above, the reason why I always arrive way earlier than my call time is because I do extensive sound checking; run down the program sequence and details with the coordinators; check if the various materials and equipment needed for our program are in place. 3. by Max Tiu, September 2016 Contrary to popular belief, famous people are not hard to please as long as you deliver quality service and pay close attention to details. After all, celebrities are just like us who simply want their milestones to be celebrated in style. That being said, competent suppliers are needed to make their special events memorable. As a supplier who has done a few celebrity events, local and international alike, I do not consider myself an expert, rather, just someone who is blessed enough to have experienced working with them. Fortunately, the ones whom I have done work for are sweet, kind and considerate. They were not unreasonable and ruthless brats like how the media portray most of them to be. One of the incidents I remember vividly is when a bride mentioned in one of our planning sessions that she wanted a certain look for the event styling. The then groom-to-be responded lovingly, “Hon, that is way beyond our budget”. Expecting her to argue her case and get her way, I was pleasantly surprised when she said in a humble manner, “I understand. What if we do this instead… ”, then proceeded to her next option which was less costly. by Max Tiu, June 2015 When I started performing in weddings, birthday events, and tinghuns in the late 1990’s, coordinators were scarce and almost unheard of. Having said that, all my events then require me to be self-sufficient. Apart from hosting and singing, I make sure that all the things we need for the program are ready and in place! In fact, a lot of my clients through the years have been asking me to come up with my own team to coordinate their events. Despite the demand for me to do so, I always decline because I personally do not believe in serving two masters at one time. After all, money isn’t everything. To this day, I ensure that I am self-reliant even if I am working with seasoned suppliers. I am hands-on when it comes to the program planning and its details. Yes! Apart from a host and a singer, I consider myself a planner when it comes to the reception program. In cases when there are no coordinators, I still end up doing everything for my beloved clients. Having been in the events industry for almost 20 years, I have come up with some tips on how not to be a “rock star wedding coordinator”, basing on my own personal experiences.
